The old adage “sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you”, simply is not true, according to researchers.

Psychologists found memories of painful emotional experiences linger far longer than those involving physical pain.

They quizzed volunteers about painful events over the previous five years.

Writing in the journal Psychological Science, they said evolutionary brain changes which allow us to work better in groups or societies could be key.

The cerebral cortex may also have had an unintended effect of allowing humans to relive, re-experience and suffer from social pain
Zhansheng Chen
Purdue University

The volunteers, all students, were asked to write about painful experiences, both physical and emotional, then given a difficult mental test shortly afterwards.

The principle was that the more painful the recalled experience, the less well the person would perform in the tests.

Test scores were consistently higher in those recalling physical rather than “social” pain.

Psychological scoring tests revealed that memories of emotional pain were far more vivid.

Social evolution

Researcher Zhansheng Chen, from Purdue University in Indiana, said that it was much harder to “re-live” physical pain than to recall social pain.

He said the evolution of a part of the brain called the cerebral cortex, which processes complex thinking, perception and language, might be responsible.

He said: “It certainly improved the ability of human beings to create and adapt, to function in and with groups, communities and cultures, and to respond to pain associated with social interactions.

“However, the cerebral cortex may also have had an unintended effect of allowing humans to relive, re-experience and suffer from social pain.”

The researchers now plan to repeat the experiment in older people, who are more likely to have experienced chronic pain.

Michael Hughesman, a child psychologist based in Germany, agreed that it was likely that emotional pain was handled in a different part of the brain from physical pain, and likely to be longer-lasting.

He said: “There is something very intangible about emotional damage – with physical pain, you can see the bruise, but in emotional abuse there is often fear and anxiety which remains.

“If someone tells you in the playground that they are going to get you after school, then you tend to be anxious and afraid about it far more than if someone just punches you there and then.”

As a therapist and a human being I have first-hand experience of both physical and emotional pain – as we all have. Both can be completely debilitating but once the physical pain has subsided there is a feeling of elation and relief.

How many people can say they have had the same relief from emotional pain? Losing your child in a supermarket brings about an emotional pain that relief can be given but how about emotional pain from incidents that occurred previously?

Through this-life regression therapy I have experienced emotionally charged memories can be re-programmed and relief can be gained. You may not think about this emotional incident all the time but what if you’re walking across a busy road when the memory suddenly enters your consciousness? Your attention may be temporarily diverted and you could be run over by a bus!

Many people (typically men – myself included) don’t believe that their emotional baggage shapes who they are but learning to face these incidents and dealing with them can give you so much strength. It’s only when you’ve dealt with such past incidents that you realise how much they affect you.

I offer the following information, as some of you have expressed an interest in the subject.

Whilst travelling the subject of the relationship between NLP and mind control came up. Since I had just completed my article on Covert Hypnosis it was a logical question. I stress, NLP consists of practical mental techniques to influence people. NLP and hypnosis have an undeserved reputation of manipulation – like mind control. This is based on people over-promising and under-delivering on the magic of NLP as an influence technology. My mentor likes to say, “NLP elicits desired responses in other people,” because he feels the term “manipulative/mind control” has a negative flavour to it. I agree with this, as long as the person has no deep desire to disagree with you. In this light, I decided that I would go over the basics of classic mind control techniques in a seminar. This is based on my research of declassified CIA material and other literature on the subjects of mind control, brain washing, cult training, and psychology. I thought I would share it with you, since you may recognize some similarities with any type of intense training you may have attended. This month I will go over how to break down psychological defenses and start classic mind control techniques.

Here are the basic steps of classic mind control:

Isolation: You have to remove the person from his or her support group. This ith the first critical part of building the dependence necessary for breaking down psychological defenses. This is removal from family, firends, and normal support systems. The military does this in basic training. It can also be done at a resort or facility. The key is – no normal contact with support systems.

Control of Communications: The next thing must be control of all communications; this is a continuation of the isolation process. All communications with others will be controlled and handled by the handlers. This can be as obvious as what happens in millitary basic training, or as subtle as having breaks spread out and shortened so it is hard to make contact and communicate with anyone outside of the group. This also starts to build dependence upon the handlers. You must go through them for any communications – outside the group or inside. You see this in groups that do not allow open communications within the group and restrain communications with those outside the group. This is greatly amplified in our constant communication age. We are so used to always being in contact. Loss of this, even for a while leads to distress. Informers are set up at this stage; the insider is the one who reports back to the trainers or handlers.

Fatigue: Physical fatigue adds to the effect of breaking down a person’s psychological strengths and defenses. You can do this through physical exercise and training (military) or just by starting early and going late in a high energy, fast pace setting (look at the indoctrination of any cult – i.e. David Koresh at Waco). As you get tired, you are easier to handle and “go along” with ideas much more smoothly.

Control of Food, Water and Rest: The targeted individuals are made aware of the independence of the handlers (or trainers) for the timing of food and water breaks. Bathroom breaks can also be added to this to amplify the effect of loss of control. Timing of rest is also up to the trainers or handlers. This also leads to blood supar levels being off and it the mercy of the handlers. (in the old CIA and KGB material, tobacco was also used as means of control. For those of us who are old enough to remomber when a majority of adults smoked, the withdrawal adds to intense feelings.) It can be as simple as in a ristrictive setting like the military or jails, or subtle like an intense seminar (fire walking).

Using the person’s own criticism against himself: Once the person is tired and possibly hungry, he begins to doubt his own judgement, thinking maybe they (the trainers) are right, or I am wrong, or both. This is amplified if the trainers have a biography on yo uso they know something about you. This is where they begin to used it. You may remember films where they use “inside information” to help turn the person. This is the reason they try to learn as much about their target as they can – so they can use it. You may also be aware of seminars that obtain information on your goals, hopes, and dreams and use that information to manipulate you later.

Bypass the resistance of the conscious mind: This can be done by hypnosis – both overtly, as in a guided meditation or hypnotic induction, or covertly, with the use of metaphor and stories. Other hypnotic processes may come into play. The main one is getting a highly charged emotional response (fire walk, board breark, breaking an addiction) and linking that to a desired response. A psychological breakthrough, real or imagined, can also be used. These emotional reactions are powerful tools. If they are used at night when you’re tired (and hungry), the effect is amplified. (This is where drugs would come into play in the old CIA literature.)

Friendliness and helpfulness of the trainers or handlers upset a person’s ability to maintain a critical attitude: This is especially true if you voluntarily have entered the process, because you are now vested in the situation. You will defend the ideas or concepts presented for the above reasons, and now your critical factores help justify the change and give credit to the trainers or handlers (or their ideas) for what went on in the process. Although you did the work, you think, “Everything I am I owe to …” This is very powerful for the emotional breakthroughss and reactions achieved in the process.

Surprise – the use of unexpected events or things: A day off, a special presentation, something that throws off the sense of ritual.

The above factors lead to the following states being created in your target. They may vary in order, but will happen if given time.

A feeling of helplessness (in classic situations) or a sense of needing something from the trainer or handler (in social settings). This could be intensified by having the person think of the problems she would like to overcome, which she has not been able to overcome on her own (helplessness).

Initial reaction to surprise. This could be at the material, the trainer, or the crowd. The reaction throws of the internal equilibrium.

A feeling of uncertainty (of what’s expected of them in classical mind control) or uncertainty that they can do what they see the trainer do.

The uncertainty leads to:

Dependence on hanlders or trainers.

Loss of objectivity and a sense of doubt.

Feeling of guilt for letting others down or not doing well.

A questioning attitude of one’s own value systems or ideas.

A feeling of breakdown or breakthrough.

A sense of belonging to the new group and needded handlers’ or trainers’ approval.

A need to defend new ideas.

Once you achieve the last two, they become self-reinforcing, so you defend the new ideas to stay in the group – you fear losing the approval of the new group, trainers or handlers.

I’d heard a lot about The Secret from reading on the web but didn’t really understand it until I downloaded and watched the film (more of a documentary really). The first fifteen minutes of the film are a little new-age for me – I know that sounds strange coming from a hypnotherapist! – but after watching the whole thing through I found that it had some very beneficial tools that we could all learn from.

Some of my research lead me to finding out that the author of ‘The Secret’ got a lot of her inspiration from a book called ‘The Science of Getting Rich’ by Wallace D. Wattles. Now this book was written in 1910 so you’d might expect it to be very out-of-date. But it isn’t, it’s on of the first and therefore one of the most genuine self-help books on discovering and creating ‘abundance’ in your life.

If you’re looking for a less new-age ‘get rich’ book then I suggest you read the very informative and witty ‘How To Get Rich’ by Felix Dennis. It’s full of useful tips by a man that’s actually got rich and lots of great poetry to keep you motivated.

The whole book is available to read online and you can find it here: http://www.portzon.com/rich1.htm

Below is the first chapter to get you in the mood (be warned for atheists, like me, it’s a little heavy on ‘God’ front…):

Preface

This book is pragmatical, not philosophical; a practical manual, not a treatise upon theories. It is intended for the men and women whose most pressing need is for money; who wish to get rich first, and philosophize afterward. It is for those who have, so far, found neither the time, the means, nor the opportunity to go deeply into the study of metaphysics, but who want results and who are willing to take the conclusions of science as a basis for action, without going into all the processes by which those conclusions were reached. It is expected that the reader will take the fundamental statements upon faith, just as he would take statements concerning a law of electrical action if they were promulgated by a Marconi or an Edison; and, taking the statements upon faith, that he will prove their truth by acting upon them without fear or hesitation. Every man or woman who does this will certainly get rich; for the science herein applied is an exact science, and failure is impossible. For the benefit, however, of those who wish to investigate philosophical theories and so secure a logical basis for faith, I will here cite certain authorities.

The monistic theory of the universe the theory that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself.

In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.

Wallace D. Wattles

Chapter 1 – The Right To Be Rich

Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with. A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich. The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining.

Man’s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritual, and physical unfoldment; or, in other words, his right to be rich. In this book, I shall not speak of riches in a figurative way; to be really rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. No man ought to be satisfied with a little if he is capable of using and enjoying more. The purpose of Nature is the advancement and unfoldment of life; and every man should have all that can contribute to the power; elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants. Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them. To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to get rich. The desire for riches is really the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life; and that desire is praise worthy. The man who does not desire to live more abundantly is abnormal, and so the man who does not desire to have money enough to buy all he wants is abnormal. There are three motives for which we live:

We live for the body
We live for the mind
We live for the soul
No one of these is better or holier than the other; all are alike desirable, and no one of the three – body, mind, or soul – can live fully if either of the others is cut short of full life and expression. It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny mind or body; and it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body or soul.

We are all acquainted with the loathsome consequences of living for the body and denying both mind and soul; and we see that real life means the complete expression of all that man can give forth through body, mind, and soul. Whatever he can say, no man can be really happy or satisfied unless his body is living fully in every function, and unless the same is true of his mind and his soul. Wherever there is unexpressed possibility, or function not performed, there is unsatisfied desire. Desire is possibility seeking expression, or function seeking performance.

Man cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, and warm shelter; and without freedom from excessive toil. Rest and recreation are also necessary to his physical life. He cannot live fully in mind without books and time to study them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship. To live fully in mind he must have intellectual recreations, and must surround himself with all the objects of art and beauty he is capable of using and appreciating.

To live fully in soul, man must have love; and love is denied expression by poverty. A man’s highest happiness is found in the bestowal of benefits on those he loves; love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving. The man who has nothing to give cannot fill his place as a husband or father, as a citizen, or as a man. It is in the use of material things that a man finds full life for his body, develops his mind, and unfolds his soul. It is therefore of supreme importance to him that he should be rich. It is perfectly right that you should desire to be rich; if you are a normal man or woman you cannot help doing so. It is perfectly right that you should give your best attention to the Science of Getting Rich, for it is the noblest and most necessary of all studies. If you neglect this study, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to God and humanity; for you can render to God and humanity no greater service than to make the most of yourself.

Chapter 2 – There is A Science of Getting Rich

There is a Science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic. There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches; once these laws are learned and obeyed by any man, he will get rich with mathematical certainty. The ownership of money and property comes as a result of doing things in a certain way; those who do things in this Certain Way, whether on purpose or accidentally, get rich; while those who do not do things in this Certain Way, no matter how hard they work or how able they are, remain poor.

It is a natural law that like causes always produce like effects; and, therefore, any man or woman who learns to do things in this certain way will infallibly get rich. That the above statement is true is shown by the following facts: Getting rich is not a matter of environment, for, if it were, all the people in certain neighborhoods would become wealthy; the people of one city would all be rich, while those of other towns would all be poor; or the inhabitants of one state would roll in wealth, while those of an adjoining state would be in poverty. But everywhere we see rich and poor living side by side, in the same environment, and often engaged in the same vocations. When two men are in the same locality, and in the same business, and one gets rich while the other remains poor, it shows that getting rich is not, primarily, a matter of environment. Some environments may be more favorable than others, but when two men in the same business are in the same neighborhood, and one gets rich while the other fails, it indicates that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

And further, the ability to do things in this certain way is not due solely to the possession of talent, for many people who have great talent remain poor, while other who have very little talent get rich. Studying the people who have got rich, we find that they are an average lot in all respects, having no greater talents and abilities than other men. It is evident that they do not get rich because they possess talents and abilities that other men have not, but because they happen to do things in a Certain Way. Getting rich is not the result of saving, or “thrift”; many very penurious people are poor, while free spenders often get rich. Nor is getting rich due to doing things which others fail to do; for two men in the same business often do almost exactly the same things, and one gets rich while the other remains poor or becomes bankrupt. From all these things, we must come to the conclusion that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

If getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way, and if like causes always produce like effects, then any man or woman who can do things in that way can become rich, and the whole matter is brought within the domain of exact science. The question arises here, whether this Certain Way may not be so difficult that only a few may follow it. This cannot be true, as we have seen, so far as natural ability is concerned. Talented people get rich, and blockheads get rich; intellectually brilliant people get rich, and very stupid people get rich; physically strong people get rich, and weak and sickly people get rich. Some degree of ability to think and understand is, of course, essential; but in so far natural ability is concerned, any man or woman who has sense enough to read and understand these words can certainly get rich.

Also, we have seen that it is not a matter of environment. Location counts for something; one would not go to the heart of the Sahara and expect to do successful business. Getting rich involves the necessity of dealing with men, and of being where there are people to deal with; and if these people are inclined to deal in the way you want to deal, so much the better. But that is about as far as environment goes. If anybody else in your town can get rich, so can you; and if anybody else in your state can get rich, so can you.

Again, it is not a matter of choosing some particular business or profession. People get rich in every business, and in every profession; while their next door neighbors in the same vocation remain in poverty. It is true that you will do best in a business which you like, and which is congenial to you; and if you have certain talents which are well developed, you will do best in a business which calls for the exercise of those talents.

Also, you will do best in a business which is suited to your locality; an ice-cream parlor would do better in a warm climate than in Greenland, and a salmon fishery will succeed better in the Northwest than in Florida, where there are no salmon. But, aside from these general limitations, getting rich is not dependent upon your engaging in some particular business, but upon your learning to do things in a Certain Way. If you are now in business, and anybody else in your locality is getting rich in the same business, while you are not getting rich, it is because you are not doing things in the same Way that the other person is doing them.

No one is prevented from getting rich by lack of capital. True, as you get capital the increase becomes more easy and rapid; but one who has capital is already rich, and does not need to consider how to become so. No matter how poor you may be, if you begin to do things in the Certain Way you will begin to get rich; and you will begin to have capital. The getting of capital is a part of the process of getting rich; and it is a part of the result which invariably follows the doing of things in the Certain Way.

You may be the poorest man on the continent, and be deeply in debt; you may have neither friends, influence, nor resources; but if you begin to do things in this way, you must infallibly begin to get rich, for like causes must produce like effects. If you have no capital, you can get capital; if you are in the wrong business, you can get into the right business; if you are in the wrong location, you can go to the right location; and you can do so by beginning in your present business and in your present location to do things in the Certain Way which causes success.

BBC Press Release – BBC2 17.03.2008 @ 9pm

www.bbc.co.uk

Imagine having your dentist pull your teeth out and drill into your jaw with
no anaesthetic – just someone muttering in your ear about being on the
beach. Sounds alarming? Welcome to the extraordinary world of
hypnotherapy.

Half a million people in England use hypnotherapy every year. It’s claimed
it can help with smoking, obesity, tinnitus, weight loss, phobias,
allergies, anxiety and even breast enlargement. What do we know about
hypnotherapy and hypnosis? And how are scientists trying to find out about
how it works and its effectiveness?

In the first in a new series, Professor Kathy Sykes, Professor of Science
and Society at Bristol University, embarks on a personal and scientific
journey to explore three popular alternative therapies: reflexology,
meditation and hypnotherapy.

Travelling across the UK, Europe and over the Atlantic to Montreal, Kathy
Sykes, in a journey that is at times funny, intimate, moving and revealing,
she follows patients who are pinning their hopes on hypnotherapy. There is
Richard, the policeman, who wants to quit smoking; Nicola, who wants to eat
less chocolate; and Mandy, who wants teeth implants without anaesthetic.
Kathy herself has a go at being hypnotised as she tries to understand more
about the science behind the hypnotic “trance.”

She meets hypnotherapists, and also mainstream scientists, who are looking
inside our brains to try and unravel what goes on during hypnosis. She
meets Professor Peter Whorwell in Manchester who is pioneering the use of
hypnotherapy for people suffering from the symptoms of Irritable Bowel
Syndrome.

A mixture of serious science and personal journey – Alternative Therapies is
intriguing viewing for anyone interested in the ever-growing, ever-confusing
and controversial world of alternative therapies.

Alternative Therapies has been fully-funded by the Open University. More
information on the series can be found at www.open2.net

101 Helpful Affirmations

Affirmations are great tools that can help you overcome fear, build your confidence, develop an abundance mind-set and more. The problem is that many people aren’t sure exactly how to write effective affirmations. Do they always have to be in present tense? Can they contain “negative” words like can’t, won’t, not, and so on?

There are plenty of differing opinions on the right and wrong ways to write effective affirmations, but the bottom line is that an affirmation can be considered effective if it works for YOU! The whole point of affirmations is to shift your thoughts and emotions to a more positive place so you feel more confident, happy, secure, abundant, or anything else you’re trying to accomplish.

Take a look at the sample affirmations below for starters and feel free to use them if they resonate with you. If not, try altering them slightly until they trigger the mind-set and emotional state you’re trying to attain.

Affirmations for Healthy Weight and Body Image:

- Today I love my body fully, deeply and joyfully.
- My body has its own wisdom and I trust that wisdom completely.
- My body is simply a projection of my beliefs about myself.
- I am growing more beautiful and luminous day by day.
- I choose to see the divine perfection in every cell of my body.
- As I love myself, I allow others to love me too.
- Flaws are transformed by love and acceptance.
- Today I choose to honor my beauty, my strength and my uniqueness.
- I love the way I feel when I take good care of myself.
- Today my own well-being is my top priority.

Affirmations for Self-Confidence and Self-Belief:

- Fear is only a feeling; it cannot hold me back.
