Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy are, to me, a way of enabling us to short-cut conscious learning by accessing the ‘alternate state’ of unconscious thought.
There’s a lot of heated debate as to what this altered state actually is and if it even actually exists at all. The trance state is something different to every individual so it’s very difficult to explain exactly what it is. In the ‘useful links’ section on the right-hand-side of this page is link to the Wikipedia entry on Hypnosis. I believe it gives a very balanced opinion on the current thoughts and theories as to what hypnosis and the trance states actually are.
Hypnosis and Brainwave patterns
- 14 to 30Hz Beta waves – Aware and Alert
- 8 to 13.9Hz Alpha waves – Hypnosis / listening to music
- 4 to 7.9Hz Theta waves – Entering and Awakening from sleep
- 0.1 to 3.9Hz Delta waves – Deep Sleep
It is believed that the hypnotic state occurs when our brains are operating at a certain frequency. It’s important to note that we all experience hypnotic states during our normal daily activity. Do you recall ever ‘losing yourself’ to a piece of music? Have you ever arrived at work thinking; how did I get here? These are trance states.
In the therapeutic arena the hypnotic trance or detached state is achieved in order to bypass conscious and learnt thought patterns. Essentially if you’re trapped in a negative thought pattern and wish to change this it’s normally deemed more effective if you bypass the conscious thought (possibly resistant conscious thought) and talk directly to the unconscious in order to learn a new, positive thought patterns.
Derren Brown’s book ‘Tricks of the Mind’ has a great and impartial description of what hypnosis and hypnotherapy are.
“Life can be pulled by goals just as surely as it can be pushed by drives.”

when you lounge around doing nothing; it’s when you’ve had everything to do,
and you’ve done it.”
